The dictionary defines the term exoteric as - capable of being understood by most people, not just an informed or select minority; accessible to ordinary people; external. Exoterism refers to the outer aspect of religion, such as the main obligatory rites of the religion. It is the domain of rituals, of moral precepts and of institutions. Islam designates the exoteric aspects by the term 'shariah' - the religious law or by az-zahir ("the outer"). |
